We know the feeling: you’re engaged, excited, and diving headfirst into wedding planning. Pinterest seems like a dream come true, overflowing with gorgeous photos and endless ideas. But let’s be honest, sometimes it can feel overwhelming.
The key is using Pinterest strategically. We’ve got some tricks to help you turn those inspiration boards into a smooth wedding planning journey (with fewer meltdowns!)
Using Pinterest to Plan Your Wedding — The Pros
Tons of Ideas
If you find yourself stuck for ideas, Pinterest can definitely help you find some! With a quick search and browse, you can fill your boards with endless possibilities. Plus, collaborate with your partner or friends by adding them as collaborators on your boards. Don’t be afraid to get creative and adapt non-wedding ideas to fit your unique vision.
Gorgeous Visuals
A lot of times, a photo is worth a thousand words. Pinterest is great for providing stunning visuals to represent your ideas.
We use it to present a variety of photos to clients, allowing them to see different variations of the same concept. It’s common for me to say things like, “Let’s take this element from this photo, combine the arrangement from this one, and place it in the setting of this photo.”
Easier Communication with Vendors
Photos from Pinterest are fantastic communication tools when working with vendors. For example, when discussing bouquets, we can share photos showcasing different shapes, sizes, and flower types you love. This helps get all of us on the same page and then we can modify or expand the design if needed!
Using Pinterest to Plan Your Wedding — The Cons
Tons of Ideas
While Pinterest offers tons of ideas, sometimes there are just too many! You might fall in love with countless ideas that don’t fit your budget or can’t be combined. Remember, it’s your wedding! Focus on the ideas that resonate with you and your vision.
No Price Tags
It’s important to remember that the gorgeous photos on Pinterest typically won’t show price tags. While it’s easy to fall in love with a dream design, the reality is the final cost can be quite different.
Wedding prices depend heavily on factors like location, season, labor involved, and flower availability.
For example, a massive floral arch overflowing with blooms might look stunning online, but the price tag could easily reach $5,000 – potentially your entire flower budget!
Same Old, Same Old
The longer you spend on Pinterest, the repetition of ideas will start to become very obvious. If you are looking for unique ideas, Pinterest may not be your friend.
Instead, find an idea and then twist it to make it your own or pair it with other ideas to completely change the feel and design of the idea. Or don’t use Pinterest — that’ll keep your ideas original!
How to ACTUALLY Use Pinterest to Plan Your Wedding
I know that I have painted a rather so-so picture of Pinterest. But it can still be very useful. This is how we use it with our clients!
Pin, Pin, Pin
Go wild and pin anything that you like. Just put it all on one board and keep pinning until you feel like you have exhausted your searches.
Pro tip: Make sure that NOT all of your searches have wedding in them — you’ll get more variety!
Take a Step Back and Look for Trends
Next, go and take a break. Like a good break, like a couple of days. You need your brain to be clear of bias when you come back to your Pinterest board. When you are ready, come back to your Pinterest board and look through it and look for any items/ideas that you kept pinning over and over again.
Obviously, there is something about those things that you really love and may want to incorporate into your wedding. Write these down on a separate piece of paper.
You can also share your board with a friend, ask them to do the same exercise, and compare notes.
Curate Your Ideas
Go through the ideas that you wrote down and decide whether you want to keep them. Are these the things that you absolutely love? Is this thing a deal breaker? Would you still love them if you had to scale them down? Can you incorporate this idea with your other ideas?
Add Your Spin
There are a few reasons why you may not be able to exactly copy an image that you see on Pinterest. Unavailable material, non-seasonal items, colour, size, shape may be things that you may want to play with. Trying to force a specific look might be even more expensive.
This is where your vendors can come in! They can offer similar options that fit your unique style and budget. Plus, they’re pros and not usually afraid to get creative! Combine elements from different inspirations to craft your own signature look.
Enjoy!
Now comes the best part – witnessing your vision come to life! Sit back, relax, and savor every moment of your wedding day. It’s the culmination of all your hard work and planning, so soak it all in!
